[4] Mothers Receive Award for Efforts in Juvenile Justice Reform
The Campaign for Youth Justice and National Juvenile Justice Network awarded Mother of Distinction Awards to Lois DeMott of Michigan, Sincilina Beckett and Giana Livingston of Connecticut; Families and Friends of Louisiana’s Incarcerated Children, and Tracy McClard of Missouri. This award is presented each Mother’s Day to mothers who have made an outstanding contribution to the juvenile justice field through working for reform in the juvenile justice system or changing the practice of trying, sentencing, or incarcerating youth in the adult criminal justice system.

[5] 2009 Presidential and Congressional Transition Memo
NJJN calls on the new administration to help states reduce crime and ameliorate state budget crises by taking a leadership role in sponsoring a White House Summit on Juvenile Justice. NJJN also calls on Congress to exert its leadership by: reauthorizing the JJDPA and reestablishing a strong Office of Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention; requiring states to assess and document the transfer of youth into the adult system; requiring states to assess and document the use of confinement and the use of community-based alternatives for youth under 18; requiring states to incorporate basic reunification planning; encouraging states to redeploy state dollars from incarceration to community-based programs; and expanding prevention and intervention funding for youth in crisis.

Article describes brain development issues for adolescents, profiles several uses of the research in advocacy efforts and addresses contrary interpretations of the research.

Two years after being designated as a site for the Annie E. Casey Foundation’s Juvenile Detention Alternatives Initiative (JDAI), Marion County, Indiana (Indianapolis) is seeing far fewer youth enter lockup each day.
