Description of CJJ
NJJN is a new initiative of the Coalition for Juvenile Justice (CJJ). The Coalition for Juvenile Justice (CJJ) is a national nonprofit comprising governor-appointed advisory groups on juvenile justice from the U.S. states, territories and the District of Columbia.
CJJ is based in Washington, DC, yet reaches every U.S. state and territory. Nationwide, more than 1,500 CJJ volunteers from the public and private sectors participate as members of governor-appointed state advisory groups on juvenile justice. For the past fifteen years, through the provision of technical assistance, policy research and national advocacy, CJJ has helped these state-level policy makers reform their juvenile justice systems.
CJJ's principal mission is to build safe communities one child at a time, by ensuring that all children and families are treated fairly and given the resources and support to be positive and productive contributions to society.
CJJ accomplishes its mission by:
- Promoting the best policies and practices in delinquency reduction and prevention.
- Educating the public and advising policy makers on urgent issues in juvenile justice.
- Assisting U.S. states and territories to meet the core requirements of the Federal Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention Act.
- Instituting effective and needed system reforms to improve the quality, cultural sensitivity and scope of community and court-based services for children, youth and families.
- Linking national, state and local advocates and organizations together, across many disciplines and circumstances, to pursue a common mission.
